O
n January 10, 1901, the world’s economy changed, and
the Petroleum Age was born. The Lucas Gusher on
Spindletop Hill in Beaumont, Texas exploded at 200 feet
high and produced around 100,000 barrels a day for nine
days straight. Within a few days, the population of Beaumont
grew from 9,000 to 40,000 people. You can see the history
of oil in the area at the Spindletop Boomtown Museum,
Texas Energy Museum, and the Museum of the Gulf Coast.
